Your smartphone looks like a device you control. You install the apps you want, choose the settings you prefer, and decide when to use it.
But spend a few minutes looking beneath the surface and that picture becomes more complicated.
Apps can request access to your location, camera, microphone, contacts, photos and other data. They can send notifications, perform background activity, connect to online services and participate in advertising systems. Modern phones give you considerably more control than they used to, but those controls are easy to ignore.
That does not mean your phone is secretly spying on everything you do. Some of the things happening in the background are completely legitimate and necessary for features to work. The problem is that many apps retain permissions and settings that you may no longer need.
When I looked at the privacy and battery controls available on current Android and iPhone devices, one thing stood out: you don't have to accept every default setting. There is quite a lot you can change.
Here are seven things your phone may be doing that deserve a closer look.
1. Apps May Be Checking Your Location When You Aren't Using Them
Location access is one of the permissions I would pay the most attention to.
An app doesn't necessarily need your precise location simply because it has a feature that uses location. A navigation app obviously needs location information while you're navigating. A delivery app may need it while tracking an active order.
A random game, shopping app or social network is a different story.
On Android, you can see which apps have location access and distinguish between options such as allowing access all the time, only while using the app, asking every time, or denying access. You can also control whether precise location is available.
Apple provides similar controls through its Location Services settings.
This matters for more than privacy. Background location can also contribute to battery consumption, depending on how an app uses it.
My rule is simple: if an app doesn't have a convincing reason to know where I am when I'm not using it, it probably shouldn't have that permission.
2. Apps Can Keep Working in the Background
Closing an app from the screen doesn't necessarily mean everything associated with it stops immediately.
Phones are designed to allow certain background activities. Apps may synchronize information, fetch new content, update data, maintain services or perform other legitimate tasks.
That functionality is useful, but it can also become excessive.
On iPhone, Apple's battery tools specifically distinguish between on-screen and background activity. Background activity can include things such as directions, music playback, photo synchronization and mail fetching.
Android devices similarly provide battery and app-management controls, although the exact menus can vary between manufacturers.
This is why I wouldn't recommend blindly disabling every background process. Some apps genuinely need it.
Instead, look at your battery usage.
If an app you rarely use is consistently doing significant work in the background, that's when I would investigate.
Don't guess which app is draining your battery. Let the phone show you.
3. Notifications Are Constantly Competing for Your Attention
This is probably the most obvious thing on the list, yet many people simply tolerate it.
Your phone can notify you about messages, emails and important events. That's useful.
But it can also interrupt you because a shopping app has a discount, a social network wants you to return, a game has an event starting, or an app wants to promote something.
Android lets you review recently sent notifications and disable notifications completely or by category.
iPhone offers similar per-app notification controls, including choices about where notifications appear and whether they make sounds or appear on the Lock Screen.
There is an interesting secondary effect here: notifications aren't just annoying. They can also wake the device and contribute to battery consumption. Apple explicitly identifies notifications as one factor that can wake the device.
I think most people should be much more aggressive about notification permissions.
If an app doesn't contain information you genuinely need to know immediately, why should it be allowed to interrupt you?
4. Your Phone May Be Building an Advertising Profile
This part is more complicated because "personalized advertising" doesn't mean exactly the same thing across every platform or app.
Android currently includes advertising privacy controls that can use topics inferred from the apps you use. Android says apps can request these topics to provide more relevant advertising, and users can turn the relevant features off in their privacy settings.
Google also provides controls for advertising identifiers and personalized advertising through Google Play services.
On iPhone, Apple's App Tracking Transparency system requires apps to ask for permission before tracking activity across other companies' apps and websites for purposes such as advertising or sharing information with data brokers.
There is an important distinction here.
Turning off personalized advertising doesn't necessarily mean you stop seeing advertisements. It generally changes how relevant those advertisements can be based on the information available to the advertising system.
That's why I wouldn't look at an ad immediately after searching for a product and conclude that one particular app must have secretly listened to the conversation. Advertising systems can use many signals, and correlation isn't proof of microphone surveillance.
The better approach is to check your actual privacy settings rather than rely on assumptions.
5. Your Apps May Have Permissions You Forgot About
This is one of the easiest problems to fix.
Think about how many apps you've installed over the years. Some of them may have been given access to your camera, microphone, contacts, photos, location or other information because you wanted a particular feature to work at the time.
Then you forgot about the permission.
Android's Privacy Dashboard lets you see which apps have accessed certain permissions and when. On supported versions, it can show activity over recent periods, making it easier to spot access you weren't expecting.
Android also provides a Permission Manager where you can review permissions by category.
Apple has an even more detailed tool called App Privacy Report. Once enabled, it can show how often apps access sensitive information such as your location, camera and microphone, along with network activity and the domains apps contact.
This is one of those settings I think people should explore at least once.
Not because you're guaranteed to discover something suspicious, but because you can't make an informed privacy decision about something you never inspect.
6. Your Phone Is Tracking More Than Just App Permissions
There's another layer that is easy to overlook: device and account activity.
For example, Google says Android's optional usage and diagnostics information can include things such as battery level, app usage frequency and network connection information.
That doesn't mean this information is necessarily being used for advertising, nor does turning off usage and diagnostics stop apps from collecting their own information.
That's the important distinction.
Your phone's operating system, your Google or Apple account, individual apps and advertising systems can all have different data practices.

This is why privacy isn't really one switch.
You might disable a location permission while leaving an app logged into an account. You might turn off personalized advertising while continuing to receive advertisements. You might disable diagnostics while an individual app continues collecting analytics.
Privacy is a collection of decisions, not a single setting.
7. Your Phone May Be Personalizing Your Experience Without You Realizing It
Modern smartphones increasingly try to anticipate what you might want.
That can include app suggestions, notifications, content recommendations, advertising and other contextual features.
Some of this processing can happen directly on the device. For example, Google's Android documentation describes contextual suggestions that can use activity and location information for personalized suggestions, with that particular feature's data remaining on the device.
That sounds very different from the idea that every personalization feature sends all your activity to a remote server.
And that's precisely why the details matter.
When I research privacy settings, I try not to treat every background process as suspicious. Some are designed to make the phone more useful, while others are there to support advertising, analytics or commercial services.
The real question is whether the benefit is worth the data or attention you're giving up.
For something genuinely useful, I may accept it.
For an app I barely use, I probably won't.
How I Would Clean Up a Phone in 15 Minutes
You don't need to spend an entire weekend turning your smartphone into a privacy bunker.
Start with the settings that matter most.
-Check which apps have location access and remove "always" access where it isn't necessary.
-Review camera, microphone, contacts and photo permissions.
-Open your battery settings and investigate apps consuming unusual amounts of background power.
-Turn off notifications from apps that don't need your immediate attention.
-Review advertising and tracking settings.
-Delete apps you no longer use instead of allowing them to sit on your phone indefinitely.
-On Android, check the Privacy Dashboard and Permission Manager.
-On iPhone, enable App Privacy Report and review the results after you've used the phone for a while.
The exact menu names can differ depending on your Android manufacturer and operating-system version, so don't worry if your settings screen doesn't look exactly like a screenshot from another phone.
Don't Disable Everything
There is one mistake I wouldn't make: treating every background activity as malicious.
Your maps app needs location to navigate. A messaging app needs network access to receive messages. Cloud storage may need background activity to synchronize files. Some security and accessibility features also require permissions that may look unusual if you don't understand what they do.
The goal isn't to make your phone useless.
It's to make your permissions match your actual needs.
The Bigger Problem Is That We Rarely Revisit Our Decisions
What bothers me most about smartphone permissions isn't necessarily that apps ask for access.
It's that we often make the decision once and forget about it.
You install an app. A permission prompt appears. You tap Allow because you want to use the feature. Six months later, you've forgotten that the permission exists.
Meanwhile, the app has become part of your phone's daily environment.
That's why occasional privacy maintenance makes sense. The same way you remove unused files and uninstall applications you no longer need, you should occasionally review what those remaining applications are allowed to do.
After analysing the current privacy controls on Android and iPhone, my biggest takeaway is surprisingly simple: you probably don't need to be paranoid about your smartphone, but you should stop treating its default settings as permanent decisions.
Your phone is designed to be helpful. Apps are designed to keep you engaged. Advertising systems are designed to make ads more relevant. None of those goals automatically makes something malicious.
But your interests and the interests of the companies building these systems aren't always identical.
That is where a little curiosity goes a long way.
Take 15 minutes tonight and open your privacy settings. You might discover that your phone isn't doing anything particularly alarming. You might also find three apps that have permissions they no longer need.
Either way, you'll know more about the device sitting in your hand every day.
And I think that's a much better place to be than simply assuming everything is fine.
