The 7 Most Common Mistakes People Make When Buying a New Laptop
Buying a laptop should be simple. You decide what you need, choose a budget, compare a few models and pick the one that gives you the most for your money.
In reality, laptop shopping has become surprisingly easy to get wrong.
A product page can advertise a Core Ultra processor, 16GB of RAM, a 1TB SSD, an OLED display and a huge battery-life number, and still leave you with a laptop that isn't particularly good for your needs. Another machine with less impressive-looking specifications can be the better purchase.
That is what makes laptop shopping frustrating. The biggest number on the specification sheet is not always the specification that matters.
After looking at current laptop buying advice, Windows requirements, modern processor lineups and the way manufacturers describe features, I think the biggest mistake people make is shopping for specifications rather than shopping for the experience they actually need.
Here are seven mistakes I would avoid before spending money on a new laptop.
1. Buying the cheapest laptop that technically meets your needs
Price is an obvious place to start, especially when your budget is tight. But there is a difference between buying an affordable laptop and buying the cheapest laptop you can find.
Microsoft's official minimum requirements for Windows 11 are surprisingly low: 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage are enough to meet the basic operating-system requirements, alongside other hardware requirements such as TPM 2.0 and a compatible processor.
Those numbers are minimum requirements, not sensible buying targets.
A laptop with 4GB of RAM might technically run Windows 11, but that doesn't mean it is a good machine for several years of browser tabs, video calls, office applications and increasingly demanding software.
For a new Windows laptop, I would generally treat 16GB of RAM as a much more comfortable starting point. Current buying guidance from RTINGS also recommends at least 16GB for Windows machines, while noting that 8GB can still make sense for very light workloads.
Storage deserves the same thinking. A 256GB SSD may be usable for basic work, but 512GB gives you considerably more breathing room once Windows, applications, updates, photos and other files begin accumulating.
The lesson is simple: don't ask whether a laptop is cheap enough. Ask whether it is cheap enough for the compromises you are accepting.
2. Getting distracted by the processor name
This is probably one of the oldest laptop-buying traps, and it has become more complicated rather than disappearing.
Many buyers see "Core i7" or "Ryzen 7" and immediately assume the machine must be faster than one with a "Core i5" or "Ryzen 5."
That conclusion can be wrong.
Modern processor families contain different chips designed for different power and performance levels. Intel, for example, now has several generations and tiers of Core and Core Ultra processors, including high-performance mobile chips aimed at gaming and workstation workloads. Intel launched its Core Ultra Series 3 family in 2026 with different classes of processors targeting different laptop categories.
The name alone doesn't tell you enough.
A better approach is to identify the exact processor model, then look at independent benchmarks and the type of laptop it is installed in.
This matters because cooling and power limits also affect performance. The same basic processor family can behave very differently inside a thin, quiet laptop compared with a larger machine designed around sustained performance.
And don't get hypnotised by clock speed. A higher GHz number isn't automatically evidence that one modern processor will outperform another.
The processor's generation, architecture, power class, core configuration and real-world benchmarks matter more than the badge printed on the laptop.
3. Treating RAM and storage as interchangeable upgrades
RAM and storage are both measured in gigabytes, which makes them easy to confuse. They do completely different jobs.
RAM is the laptop's short-term working space. It helps the computer keep applications and data readily available while you're using them.
Storage is where your operating system, applications and files live.
Think of RAM as your desk and storage as the filing cabinet. A larger filing cabinet doesn't give you a bigger desk.
This distinction becomes particularly important when comparing something like 8GB RAM/1TB SSD against 16GB RAM/512GB SSD.
For someone who mostly browses the web, writes documents and uses productivity software, I would often prefer 16GB of RAM and 512GB of SSD storage. The extra storage is useful, but insufficient RAM can become a more immediate limitation when multitasking.
There is another detail buyers frequently miss: whether the RAM can be upgraded.
Some laptops still allow memory upgrades, while many thin machines use soldered RAM. If the memory is soldered and you buy 8GB, you may be stuck with 8GB for the entire life of the machine.
That is a much bigger deal than it looks on the specification sheet.
Storage is sometimes upgradeable too, but don't assume it is. Check the manufacturer's service documentation or the exact model's hardware layout before buying.
4. Paying extra for an impressive screen without considering battery life
OLED displays are one of the most tempting upgrades in modern laptops.
Deep blacks, strong contrast and vibrant colours can make an OLED screen look spectacular. But that doesn't automatically make it the best screen for every buyer.
Recent laptop comparisons show why. Tom's Guide recently highlighted a case where an IPS version of a laptop lasted significantly longer than its OLED counterpart, while still offering a strong everyday display.
This doesn't mean OLED is bad.
If you edit photos, create video, watch a lot of movies or simply care deeply about display quality, OLED can be an excellent reason to spend more.
But if your laptop is primarily for documents, programming, browsing and office work, a good IPS panel may give you a better balance of battery life, brightness, resolution and price.
I would pay attention to more than the word "OLED."
Look at:
-Panel brightness
-Resolution
-Refresh rate
-Colour coverage
-Aspect ratio
-Glossy versus matte finish
-Touch support
-Power consumption
A beautiful screen is less impressive when you're constantly searching for a charger.
5. Believing the advertised battery life number
"Up to 18 hours."
"Up to 22 hours."
"Up to 27 hours."
These numbers look fantastic on a product page. The problem is the phrase "up to."
Battery life depends on the workload, screen brightness, processor, display technology, wireless connectivity, applications and power settings. Different manufacturers and reviewers can also use different testing methods.
Intel, for example, advertises battery-life figures for its newest processors under specific testing conditions. Its Core Ultra Series 3 announcements include claims of up to 27 hours for certain configurations.
That doesn't mean every laptop containing one of those processors will give you 27 hours of everyday use.
Independent testing has repeatedly shown that advertised battery figures can differ substantially from real-world results.
So instead of buying based on the largest number, look for independent battery tests of the exact laptop configuration you are considering.
And pay attention to the display.
A high-resolution, bright, high-refresh-rate OLED panel can consume considerably more power than a lower-power IPS panel. That's one reason two laptops with similar processors and battery capacities can have very different endurance.
6. Ignoring what you actually plan to do with the laptop
This is the mistake behind many of the others.
Someone buying a laptop for Microsoft Office doesn't need the same machine as someone editing 4K video. A programmer working with virtual machines has different requirements from someone primarily browsing the web. A gamer needs to think about the GPU, cooling and display refresh rate in ways that a student writing essays may not.
Before comparing laptops, write down what you actually intend to do.
For example:
Basic productivity: 8–16GB RAM, a modern efficient processor and a good SSD may be enough.
Programming: 16GB is a sensible starting point, with 32GB becoming valuable for virtual machines, containers and heavier development environments.
Gaming: The dedicated GPU matters enormously. A powerful CPU paired with a weak GPU doesn't suddenly become a great gaming laptop.
Creative work: CPU performance, GPU capability, RAM, storage speed and display quality can all matter.
Travel and school: Weight, keyboard quality, battery life, charging and durability may be more important than raw performance.
This is why there is no universally "best" laptop.
The best laptop is the one that spends your money on the things you actually use.

7. Forgetting the things that aren't on the specification sheet
This is the mistake I think deserves more attention.
Laptop specifications tell you a lot, but they don't tell you everything.
A laptop can have an excellent processor and still have a terrible keyboard. It can have 32GB of RAM and a beautiful screen but poor port selection. It can have a large battery but weigh far more than you expected.
Before buying, check the less glamorous details:
-Keyboard quality and layout
-Trackpad quality
-Number and type of USB ports
-USB-C charging
-HDMI or display output
-Webcam quality
-Speaker quality
-Wi-Fi version
-Fingerprint reader or other security features
-Weight and thickness
-Warranty
-Repairability and upgrade options
And if you're buying a refurbished or used laptop, become even more careful.
Verify the exact model number and serial number where possible. Check the battery condition, screen, keyboard, ports, hinges, charger and storage health. Don't accept a seller's generic description such as "Core i7, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD" as enough information.
There can be several configurations hiding behind the same laptop family name.
The laptop specification trap is getting worse
Something else has changed in 2026: laptop marketing increasingly revolves around AI features.
You may see labels such as AI PC, Copilot+ PC, NPU and TOPS everywhere.
These aren't meaningless specifications, but they can become distractions if you don't have a use for them.
Microsoft's current requirements for Copilot+ PC features include a 40-TOPS NPU, 16GB of RAM, eight logical processors and at least 256GB of storage.
The NPU is essentially a processor specialised for certain AI workloads. It can handle tasks more efficiently than relying entirely on the CPU or GPU.
But I wouldn't pay a large premium simply because a sticker says "AI PC."
Ask what software you actually use benefits from the hardware.
That's the difference between buying a feature and buying something useful.
The smartest way to compare laptops
After researching all of these factors, I think the simplest approach is to stop comparing laptops by one specification at a time.
Instead, create a shortlist and compare the whole machine.
A laptop with 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, a modern processor, a good IPS display, strong battery life and a comfortable keyboard can be a much better purchase than a flashy machine with 32GB RAM and an OLED display if the second laptop costs substantially more and doesn't improve the things you actually care about.
And don't forget software support. Windows 11's requirements are only the baseline; Microsoft also maintains a list of supported processors and hardware requirements that can affect long-term compatibility.
For a purchase that may last four or five years, that matters.
My biggest takeaway: don't buy the specification sheet
Laptop shopping has become a strange game where manufacturers can make a product look extraordinary by putting the right numbers in the right places.
A huge SSD sounds better than a smaller one. A higher CPU tier sounds better than a lower one. OLED sounds better than IPS. A larger battery number sounds better than a smaller one.
Sometimes those things genuinely are better.
But not always.
The smartest laptop purchase isn't the machine with the most impressive specifications. It's the machine where the specifications, design, battery, screen, keyboard, upgrade options and price all make sense together.
That is the approach I would take before spending my money. Decide what you need first, identify the specifications that actually affect that workload, and only then start comparing models.
It might take an extra hour of research before you buy. That hour can save you from spending years using the wrong laptop.
